Data Integration, Warehousing & Automated Reporting
The customer is a mid tier Gold Mining operation with over 14 sites situated globally, with the overall operations producing approximately 1.4 million oz. of gold p.a. The targeted site was a large mining pit located in the heart of Papua New Guinea (PNG) with the potential to produce over 4 million oz. of gold over its foreseeable life span. The site is predicted to arrive at mineral exhaustion by the year 2025.

The mine site, like many operations, had multiple software systems and standalone discrete packages capturing and producing important data required to run the mine. Significant time was spent opening and closing as well as logging in and logging out of multiple different software systems to gather the information required for management, reporting and real time decision making. It was common practice for engineers to copy and paste information from multiple source systems into excel based reports, email these from one department to the other, with each department adding information along the way prior to being presented to management. The number of source systems was believed to be 50 plus, including all software packages used to manage mining, mobile fleet, geology, processing, production, maintenance, environmental, financial, human resources, safety etc. The existing process was inefficient with hundreds of man hours being spent each year on the collection of information for decision making, with obvious gaps in information accuracy and the capability to display the information in a useful way. The challenge was to integrate all of these systems into a common data warehouse, so that engineers could open one portal and have access to unlimited data from all systems so they where able to analyze, compare, trend and report on.
MPPIglobal’s Optimum software platform was put in place as a solution to the challenge. Three modules were selected as part of the Optimum suite for the deployment, the modules being; Analytics, Data Portal and Reporting. The Optimum platform intelligently integrates with all known software packages on sites. It also stores data in its warehouse as well as the source systems, so that all data is ready to be called on as required. Optimum provides a single integrated login to seamlessly access all available data from all software systems, as well as providing extensive analysis capability being able to trend, analyze, graph, compare, display and store calculations and algorithms on all available data at the mine. Optimums integrated reporting layer can then access the data warehouse to provide automatic reporting across any time frame delivering configured reports directly to staff. The Analytics module also provides real-time visual displays in the form of interactive dashboards that can be used for meetings. These dashboards also have drill down capability for specific analysis.
The project was conducted in a three phased approach as requested by the customer, with specific departments identified in each phase. Each phase was started with a discovery workshop, identifying each report required for each department and then mapping the data sources, which in turn identified the integration requirements for software systems. The data storage architecture, reporting requirements and workflows were documented and agreed to. MPPIglobal engineers then configured the integration connections required to each source software system. They then built the automatic reports and real-time visual dashboards for each phase. Each phase went for approximately 12 weeks incorporating a period of testing, training and change management.
After implementing this solution in the site, the risk of human error, data loss and data breaches where heavily reduced, while also empowering personnel by providing timely and easy access to meaningful data. Other results include:
